Speech and Debate

Expectations: Kids are expected to be willing to speak on a variety of topics. There will be homework in the form of preparing presentations. They need to respect each other and the teachers.
Class Description: This class will alternate weeks developing speech and public speaking skills, as well as practicing our argumentative skills with debates. This will be a fun class! Kids will be able to choose their topics within given parameters.
Speech weeks will include some of the seven types of speeches (such as persuasive, motivational and impromptu), roast and toast, speech for college, and speech needed for everyday adult life - public speaking, etc.
During debate weeks we will learn and follow standard debate protocol and rules, debate different topics. Some weeks you may study just one side of a topic. Others you may study both sides of things, then be told in the moment which side you'll present.
